Pre-retirees and new retirees

Hi, I’m Mark Ellison. Welcome to RetireBeam.

If you’re here because retirement feels confusing, intimidating, or a little late to start, pull up a chair. You’re exactly who I built this site for. My job is to take the big, messy questions like “When should I take Social Security?” and “Am I saving enough?” and turn them into small, clear next steps you can actually follow.

Why I care about retirement planning

I grew up in a hardworking family where money was more stress than strategy. It wasn’t that my parents didn’t try. They did. They worked, paid bills, and tried to make the “right” choices.

The problem was that retirement rules can feel like fine-print instructions that only make sense after you’ve already made a mistake. Watching my own parents wrestle with Social Security timing and retirement income decisions lit a fire in me. I could see how one unclear choice could echo for years. And I could also see the quiet shame that creeps in when people feel like they’re “behind” or “should’ve known.”

That experience shaped everything I do today. I believe financial knowledge should feel like turning on a light, not getting graded on a test.

From HR benefits to CFP®

Before I earned the CFP® certification, I spent years working in corporate human resources in benefits roles. If you’ve ever stared at your 401(k) website and thought, “I have no idea what any of this means,” trust me, you’re not alone. I used to get those questions every day.

Sometimes people would stop by my office with a calm face and a shaky voice. Other times it was full-on panic. They’d say things like:

  • “I picked a fund years ago and I don’t know what it is.”
  • “My coworker said I should do Roth, but I don’t even know what that means.”
  • “I’m 60. Did I mess this up?”

I realized something: most folks aren’t lazy or irresponsible. They’re busy. They’re doing their best. They just never got a clear, patient explanation.

So I went all in, earned the CFP® certification, and committed my career to making retirement planning feel accessible, practical, and calm.

What RetireBeam does

RetireBeam is here to help everyday people build a secure retirement without feeling overwhelmed.

Think of retirement planning like packing for a long trip. You do not need to bring everything you own. You just need the essentials, packed in the right order, with a plan for what happens if the weather changes. RetireBeam is here to be that packing list.

Our mission

To strip away the jargon and the shame, and replace it with simple, step-by-step confidence.

What you can expect here

  • Clear explanations of retirement topics in plain language, like we’re talking across the kitchen table.
  • Practical checklists that help you take action, not just read and worry.
  • Real-life examples that show how decisions can play out over time, especially for late starters.
  • Balanced guidance that respects both math and real life, because retirement is not lived on a spreadsheet.
  • Sources when rules matter so you can see where key details come from, especially on topics tied to the SSA and IRS.

When it helps, I also make things tangible. For example, I might walk you through a simple way to compare claiming Social Security at 62 vs. full retirement age vs. 70, including the trade-offs that tend to surprise people.

What I write about

Retirement is a puzzle with a few big pieces. I focus on the ones that usually create the most stress and the biggest opportunities.

  • Social Security timing: making sense of your choices without fear-based hype.
  • 401(k) and IRA basics: how to contribute, invest, and avoid common potholes.
  • Taxes in retirement: what tax brackets really mean, and why “tax-free” rarely means what people think it means.
  • Roth conversions: how to think through them using simple trade-offs, not fancy formulas.
  • Retirement paychecks: building a plan for withdrawals so you are not guessing month to month.

My promise is simple: I will keep it honest, keep it understandable, and keep it focused on decisions you can actually control.

If you’re a late starter

If you feel behind, I want you to hear this clearly: you’re not alone, and you’re not broken.

I’ve talked with and helped many people who started seriously planning in their 40s, 50s, and yes, their 60s. The winning move is not perfection. It is momentum. A few smart decisions, made consistently, can change the entire trajectory of your retirement.

RetireBeam is a judgment-free zone. No scolding. No “you should’ve started at 22” lectures. Just a steady plan from where you are to where you want to be.

How to use this site

I’m glad you found your way here. If you’re not sure where to start, start small. Pick one topic that’s been nagging at you, read one article, and take one step. That is how confidence is built.

When rules are involved, I will point you to the original source and then translate it into plain English. When the answer depends on your personal numbers, I will show you the trade-offs and the questions to ask next.
